Many civilians were injured in an attack on Awo Mmamma in Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State.
Houses were set on fire in the Nigerian army raid on Monday, November 22, 2021.
Residents said the attack started in the afternoon and lasted until evening.
“People were doing their normal business when the soldiers arrived and fired sporadically before setting shops and houses on fire,” an eyewitness said.
Ucheamaka Okonkwo, a resident whose house was among those set on fire, disclosed that the soldiers had invaded the community with Hilux vans, but did not disclose the reason for the raid.
“They burned down many houses, including my father’s house. Many villagers have fled, including those who were shot and wounded,” she said.
Meanwhile, military source who confirmed the incident claims that the soldiers regrouped and return to the community after unidentified gunmen killed a military officer.
He declined to disclose identity of the soldier allegedly killed.
