Edo election: Obaseki Wins As Ize-Iyamu Threatens To Unveil New Line Of Action

Edo election: Buhari congratulates Obaseki

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Sunday, congratulated Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on his victory at the state governorship election held on Saturday.

Obaseki, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, defeated Osagie Ize-Iyamu of Buhari’s All Progressives Congress at the poll.

The President, according to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, commended the electoral process that saw the Independent National Electoral Commission declaring Obaseki winner.

In the statement titled “President Buhari commends election process in Edo State reiterates commitment to free and fair elections,” Shehu quoted Buhari as reiterating his commitment to credible elections.

In congratulating Obaseki, the President was further quoted as urging him to “show grace and humility in victory.”

Buhari said, “My commitment to free and fair elections is firm, because, without free and fair elections, the foundation of our political and moral authority will be weak.

“I have consistently advocated for free and fair elections in the country because it is the bedrock of true democratic order.

“Democracy will mean nothing if the votes of the people don’t count or if their mandate is fraudulently tampered with.”

He commended the people of the state, the political parties, candidates, and security agencies for conducting themselves responsibly.

Edo election: I’II announce my next plan soon -Ize-Iyamu

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Edo State, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has said he will soon announce his next line of action.

He said this while reacting to the declaration of Governor Godwin Obaseki as the winner of the Saturday poll.

Ize-Iyamu, who trailed the winner with over 84,000 votes, said he was still studying the election’s results.

He thanked the people of the state, alleging that many of his supporters were not allowed to vote.

He said this in a message posted on his Facebook page.

It read, “I hereby thank and appreciate my teeming supporters, who have had to endure many evils including being prevented from exercising their franchise, for their support and determination during the election process.

“I assure you all that I am studying the results along with other party members and will announce the next line of action soon. God bless you all.” Reports by Punch
